Blogging On My Phone

For those of you who know me, this probably won’t come as a huge surprise, but lately I’ve been discovering that I’m even a bigger geek than I had already suspected. I’m writing this blog entry while riding on the subway. I recently downloaded the WordPress app onto my new iPhone. Let’s see if this helps make me a better blogger!

I’m getting better typing with my thumbs. And as long as I’m lucky enough to get a seat on the train, I think this is going to work!

The summer has blasted on by. I had company most of the time. I’ve been feeling pretty “spatially challenged”. I’m looking forward to the day we have a 20 room penthouse overlooking Central Park, (in my dreams), and I’ve got enough guest rooms for everyone who visits.

Now I’m riding a crosstown bus. I stopped off at The Strand bookstore. (Google it if you don’t know what I’m talking about) bought several books and then headed over Trader Joe’s in Union Square. Couldn’t get a cab as this is Friday. Was carrying 4 bags of wine and groceries, when the bus came. I had to step over a subway grate to get to the bus, but I’m wearing a flowing skirt and I just did a “Marilyn Monroe” where it flew up around my blouse. I was carrying so many bags that I really couldn’t hold it down. Good thing I’m wearing nice underwear today. Noticed a young girl pointing and laughing at me after this happened. Hey, I’ve got nothing to hide! And good thing. I think I just gave a few people quite a show!

I’m home now. It’s been a long day and hubby and puppy and I are leaving early in the morning to go camping in my van this weekend. We’re heading out to the Delaware Water Gap where there are no buses OR subways! I’m going to settle into a nature coma for a while. Hope you all have a relaxing weekend.

As Time Flies By

I can hardly believe it. It’s already August and as far as I can tell, the end of summer is right around the corner. I realize that sounds kind of fatalistic, but I really don’t mean it to be!

I’ve been keeping myself tremendously busy over the past couple of months by putting together a real, honest to goodness BAND! These are guys that are into rehearsing whether we have a show or not. Like the early days of playing music for the love of it.

Some of you might say, “Deni, what the hell have you been doing the past few years? What’s the big deal? You’ve been playing shows all the time with amazing players!”

Well, the BIG difference is that THESE guys are PART of the act now! I’ll tell you more about them soon, but for now, take my word for it. I’m enjoying the music more than I have in a LONG time!

We’re even bantering around band names. If any of you have any suggestions, please pass them on! “Deni Bonet and the (…)”. If we use your suggestion, you’ll get free admission for life to every one of our shows, and a million dollars. (OK, I’m lying about the million, but if I HAD a million to give you, don’t you know I would?)

Iphone Lust

So what are the odds?

Brit Boy and I decided a while back that we were going to take the plunge and invest in a couple of iPhones. We NEED to have these phones for our business. What music management company worth its weight in CD’s would be caught dead in the “biz” without them? (OK, I’m being a little unrealistic, but I REALLY wanted one of these phones. You all know I’m a geek, and I’m proud of it!)

BUT I’D BE DAMNED IF I WAS GOING TO WAIT IN LINE TO BUY ONE!!! (I’m not THAT goofy over a phone.)

Last week, stupidly thinking the frenzy was finally over, I walked over to the Apple store on Prince St. in Soho and found the line went down the street, round the corner, and then down ANOTHER street! Some guy even offered to sell me his place in line for $20. I turned it down as I was afraid people in line would beat me up! (Like I said, I didn’t need the phone that bad).

Yesterday, I decided to take Rosie on a different morning walk, and - wouldn’t you know it - we found ourselves in front of the Apple Store on Prince St. at around 10:30 AM. There were 3 guys in line. I asked them what was up, and they told me that the store had just “announced” that they had received a new shipment of iPhones just ten minutes previously, and they would be selling them within 20 minutes. So Rosie and I got in line and waited. Actually it was more like 45 minutes, but when the doors opened, we were served immediately, and I walked out with my brand-spanking new 16 Gig white iPhone with a hot pink cover with flowers on it!

What was even neater was that the line behind me built up REALLY quickly - within minutes was down the block and around the corner again. People walking by asked us how long we had been waiting and I couldn’t help myself. I lied. I told them that I had been there since 3 AM and I was starting to digest my stomach lining from hunger!

Fortunately, we were in the shade for most of our wait, so Rosie was perfectly OK. Here she is waiting in line for our iPhone…

In the last few minutes, the sun started to get really hot, and since we were standing so close to the front door, the people around me were totally fine with holding my place in then line so I could bring Rosie inside into the air-conditioning to hang out in the cool.

So why do I feel like I just hit the lottery? I’m still going to have to pay for the damn thing, and it IS just a phone, after all. But at least I didn’t have to wait in line for five hours or longer. And now it’s MINE, ALL MINE! I know it’s silly, but I can’t stop fondling my new phone. There’s something behind the hype. I’m in geek love again.

Another Great Review!

I’m so excited. My new CD, LAST GIRL ON EARTH, just got another glowing review today from “The Next Big Thing”, a really great website and podcast which features new and upcoming artists and their music. They’re going to be featuring some of my music on their podcast. Go HERE to listen.

Meanwhile, check out the review. If you get a second, I’d really appreciate it if you could hop over there and leave a comment on my behalf. Click HERE to read it on their site.

Here’s the actual review. My dad will be so proud…

The CD cover of this Singer/Songwriter/Violinist’s new release gives a clever hint into the ambiguity and essence of her creations. The artist, dressed in black, lies in a field of warm brown and red instruments, except for the one she holds in her hand, which is a delicate COLD blue.

We already know, before even reading the revealing song titles, that there will be a gleeful mix of the sharp and the gentle.

Opening track ‘Is This A Test’ juggles feisty brash guitar, with a pure pop knowledge and delightfully the violin isn’t thrown head of the mix, but subtly swings around the edges of one of the few songs about fear written this year you can dance crazy to.

Bonet isn’t afraid to poke fun at her persona and her relationships, deep in the security of self knowledge and ability to write about love without feeling self conscious.

After a quirky cover of a soul/disco classic (Cameo’s ‘Word Up) we venture further leftfield with an intriguing take of scattered overheard conversations, showing us again the unease that twirls just inside the so called ordinary.

We encounter two versions of the track ‘Last Girl On Earth’ and for me the sparse piano/string driven thing works the best, showcasing once more the fragile hesitation, balancing tightrope like, with the strong smile/shrug.

We come now to my two favourite tracks on the album. ‘It Sucks But It’s True’ has a glorious edge to it, allowing the writers irritation to become a ragged changeling of an alt rock song.

And finally ‘Fuck It’ a sweet foul mouthed anthem, destined to be sung in cars and bars and stadiums, with pride and drunken vigour.
